Local sources said that at least 22 people were killed and “many, many more” were injured in gunshots in the city of Lewiston, Maine, Wednesday evening, with police indicating that the gunman was still missing.  According to the media, City Councilor Robert McCarthy informed CNN that the death toll in the shooting rampage has grown to 22 in a bowling alley and at least one more venue, a local restaurant and pub.

“My understanding is that they have a tentative identification… of the shooter at the bowling alley, confirmed 22 dead, many, many more injured,” McCarthy was quoted as saying.

The local police shared a photo of the shooter on Facebook, showing him with what seemed to be a semi-automatic rifle inside the bowling alley. The bearded man was dressed in a brown shirt, blue trousers, and brown shoes and police urged anybody with information on his identification to contact them right away.

They also posted a photo of a white SUV and requested the public’s assistance in identifying it, claiming that the front bumper had been painted black.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department said on Facebook that they are “investigating two active shooter events.”

“We are encouraging all businesses to lock down or close while we investigate. The suspect is still at large.”

According to the White House, President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation.

Maine Governor Janet Mills also stated that she is “aware of and has been briefed on the active shooter situation in Lewiston.”
